Brooksville and the Area

Wilbrook RV Park sits in Brooksville, in Noxubee County, in east-central Mississippi. It is a small town, and that is rather the point — it is quiet here, but you are not far from anything.

Easy On, Easy Off

Three roads run north and south past Brooksville, and it is worth knowing which is which before you arrive.

  • US-45 — divided highway, separated lanes
  • Alt US-45 — divided highway, separated lanes
  • MS-145 — the old highway. Two-way, 35 mph, and these days more of a main street than a highway.

We are off MS-145, the old road — so however you are crossing this part of Mississippi, you come off the divided highway onto a quiet two-lane, and turn off that into the park.

That is the part worth knowing if you are driving something long. You are never swinging a large RV straight off a divided highway with traffic stacking up behind you — you are already down to 35 miles an hour on the old road before you turn onto Wilbrook Street, and off that into the park.

And there is a good line of trees standing between the park and the highway, so the road noise mostly stays out on the road.

Wilbrook RV Park from the air with MS-145, the old two-lane highway, running along the upper left of the frame. A strip of grass and trees separates the road from the park. The gravel apron, the angled pads with RVs on them and the two self-storage buildings fill the rest of the frame, with woodland behind.
MS-145 along the top left, and the park set back behind a strip of grass and trees. You turn off a 35 mph two-lane, not off a divided highway.

Fuel is about three quarters of a mile south of us — a two-minute drive, gas and diesel both. Handy if you would rather not roll in on a low tank, or want to fill up before you set off in the morning.

Yes, it has diesel — and you can actually get to it

The gas pumps are at the front. The diesel is on a separate island round on the southeast side, so the cars filling up at the front are not in your way.

Everything You Need Is Inside a Mile

Brooksville is a small town, but you are not short of anything. Breakfast, lunch, fuel and a haircut are all within a mile of your space — most of them within half of one. Dinner is the exception: for that, Macon is ten minutes south.

There is no sidewalk along the highway out here, so we would point you toward your keys rather than your walking shoes. But nothing is more than a couple of minutes away.

Ole Country Bakery

About a third of a mile south on MS-145, the old highway — a two-minute drive, and the same road we are on.

A proper old-fashioned country bakery, and it has been here since 1981. Homemade cakes, pies, doughnuts and breads, and coffee they roast themselves on the premises in small batches.

They do lunch as well — deli sandwiches, soups, salads and a salad bar — and there is seating, so you can sit down with a cup of coffee rather than carry it away. They also stock local honey, country cookbooks and gifts, if you are looking for something to take home.

Worth knowing if you are arriving on a Saturday evening — they are closed on Sundays, so Saturday morning is your chance.

Nearby, and a Few Minutes Away

Magnolia Market

About 800 feet up the road — barely a minute from the gate. A family-run fabric and sewing shop that also carries bulk foods and fresh flowers — a bulk food store rather than a full grocery.

  • Monday – Friday8:30am – 5:00pm
  • Saturday9:00am – 3:00pm

Kade's Klips, right next to the market

Same stop as Magnolia Market, so a haircut and your shopping are one short trip. Run by one of the young men from the local community. Handy if you are staying a while — our monthly guests and work crews find it useful.

Somewhere to eat in the evening

Honestly: not in Brooksville. The bakery does a proper lunch, but it closes at 4pm on weekdays, 2pm on Saturday, and all day Sunday. Worth knowing before you unhitch and settle in.

You have two choices, and they suit different evenings:

  • Macon — ten minutes south. Closest, a handful of places.~6.5 mi
  • Columbus — 25 minutes north up US-45. Further, but plenty of choice.21 mi

Ten minutes south, in Macon

Head down the highway for about ten minutes and you are in Macon, the county seat. The Wagon Wheel and Mi Ranchito (Mexican, and the nearest of the Macon places) are both there. And if you just want something quick and familiar, McDonald's and KFC are on the same stretch of road.

An RV Park Half an Hour From Mississippi State

Starkville is twenty-five miles northwest of the gate — about thirty minutes.

Easy road nearly the whole way. So if you are looking for an RV park near MSU, this one is comfortably inside the hour, with full hookups and room for a long RV.

Home game weekends are what people ask about. You can drive in for the afternoon and come back afterwards to a quiet space with your own hookups, rather than to a hotel car park. Five of our fifteen spaces are pull-thru, so nobody is reversing a thirty-eight-foot trailer into anything at the end of a long day in the sun.

The rate is $45 a night.

There are only fifteen spaces. On a game weekend, call us first to be sure we have a space.

Home dates and kick-off times are on Mississippi State’s own football schedule.

Breaking the Drive to the Gulf

About four hours from here to the beaches.

A good many of our overnight guests are on their way down to the coast. Four hours is far enough that doing it all in one run makes a long day of it, and close enough that you arrive in the morning rather than late at night.

Pull in, plug in, sleep, and be gone by eight if that is the plan. The pull-thru spaces are there for exactly this: you never unhitch, and you never back up.

Check-in is 7:00am to 6:00pm, and we are glad to book you over the phone.

Staying Near Someone at Oakwood Manor

Oakwood Manor is about 1,900 feet from the park.

If you have come to spend time with a parent or another relative there, you can park your RV a few minutes away and be there morning and evening — without paying for a motel, and without the long drive back and forth each day.

Our weekly rate is $215 and our monthly rate is $550, so staying a while does not have to be expensive. And if you are not sure yet how long you will need to be here, just say so when you call. We will work it out.

Coming For a Retreat at The Dwelling Place

The Dwelling Place is a Christian retreat and prayer centre set on seventeen acres of pine woodland, 4.9 miles from us — about ten minutes.

They have three cottages and a guest house of their own, but the whole place only holds around eighteen people. If you are coming for a retreat, a Bible study or a small conference and would rather bring your own RV — or if the group you are with has filled their rooms — you are welcome to park with us and drive over.

Call (662) 574-0131 and we will hold you a space.

Two Mornings Worth Having

Both about twenty-two miles from the gate, in opposite directions. Neither needs booking, and neither is a whole day unless you want it to be.

The Snagboat Montgomery

The U.S. Snagboat Montgomery is moored at the lock and dam at Pickensville, Alabama — 22 miles east, about 25 minutes, over the state line.

A snagboat is a working boat that pulled fallen trees and other hazards out of the river to keep it open for barges. She is a steam-powered sternwheeler, and she is preserved rather than scrapped, which makes her worth the drive if you like machinery, rivers, or the sort of history that is still sitting in the water where it worked.

Before you drive out

Hours are seasonal — call before you go.

Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge

The Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge is 22 miles west, about 36 minutes — and it is a migratory bird refuge. That is what people come for.

If you keep binoculars in the RV, this is worth building a morning around. If you do not, it is still a quiet few hours of water, woodland and open sky, well under an hour from your space.

What you will see changes with the season — check with the refuge before you go.

And One For a Whole Day

Tombigbee National Forest is 60 miles west, about an hour, over toward Ackerman.

That is an hour each way, so treat it as a day out rather than a morning — take lunch with you. If you have come to this part of Mississippi for the outdoors rather than to break a journey, it is the biggest thing within reach.
